Professor João Mano

Full Professor of Biotechnology at the Chemistry Department

João F. Mano is a Full Professor of Biotechnology at the Chemistry Department of University of Aveiro, Portugal. He combines advanced biomaterials and cells towards multidisciplinary concepts in the field of regenerative and personalized medicine. Specifically, he utilizes biomimetic and nano/micro-technology approaches to develop polymer-based biomaterials for the creation of biomedical devices with enhanced structural and multi-functional properties. He also engineers microenvironments to regulate cell behavior and organization, with the goal of clinically applying these technologies in advanced therapies or in the bioengineering of disease models. He serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Materials Today Bio (Elsevier). He has been coordinating multiple research projects, including 2 Advanced Grants, 1 Synergy Grant, and 3 Proof-of-Concept Grants from the European Research Council. He received different honours, including two honoris causa doctorates (Univ. of Lorraine and Univ. Utrecht), the George Winter Award 2020 from the ESB and he was elected fellow FEurASc, FBSE and FAIMBE.

Associate Professor Fan Yang 

Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and of Bioengineering

Fan Yang is an Associate Professor with tenure at Stanford University with joint appointments in the Departments of Bioengineering and Orthopedic Surgery. She is the founder and Director of Stanford Stem Cells and Biomaterials Engineering Laboratory, and also Co-director of Stanford NIH Biotechnology Training Program. Her research seeks to develop therapies for regenerating human tissues lost due to diseases or aging, and to build tissue engineered 3D models for understanding disease progression and informing drug discovery. Her lab invents biomaterials and engineering tools to elucidate and modulate biology, and also uses biology to inform materials and engineering design. In particular, she focus on developing hydrogels as 3D cell niche to bolster tissue regeneration through modulating how cells sense local niche mechanical properties, or inducing an immune response and crosstalk that favor a regenerative response. Prior to joining Stanford, Dr. Yang received her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University, and then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at MIT under Prof. Robert Langer. In recognition of her innovation, she has been recognized by numerous awards including Fellow of American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, MIT TR35 Global list honoree, National Science Foundation CAREER award, Young Investigator Award from Society for Biomaterials, Ellen Weaver Award by the Association for Women in Science, Baxter Faculty Scholar Award, the McCormick Faculty Award, and Stanford Asian American Faculty Award etc.

Director of the Sydney Precision Data Science Centre and an NHRMC Investigator Fellow.

Professor Jean Yang is a leader in statistical bioinformatics who works in cutting-edge biomedical research. She is currently the Director of the Sydney Precision Data Science Centre and an NHRMC Investigator Fellow. Her research has led to seminal advances in the integration of multi-layered biological data by removing extraneous variability and accounting for heterogeneity. Recently, she has made similarly significant advances in scalable data integration in single-cell transcriptomics sequencing. The success of her work has enabled world-leading research into melanoma, coronary artery disease, Parkinson’s disease and kidney transplants. She was awarded the 2015 Moran Medal in statistics from the Australian Academy of Science in recognition of her work on developing methods for molecular data arising in cutting-edge biomedical research. She was elected a Senior Fellow of the Australian Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Society in 2022 and inducted as a fellow of the Royal Society of New South Wales in 2025. As a statistical data scientist who works at the interface of statistics, biomedicine, and health, she enjoys developing novel methods with translational potential in a collaborative environment, working closely with investigators from diverse backgrounds.

Professor Steven ( Xiaolin) Cui

Dr. Steven (Xiaolin) Cui is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the School of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. His research focuses on regenerative medicine, smart biomaterials, single-atom nanozymes, and advanced biofabrication, with particular emphasis on myocardial repair and tissue regeneration. He has served as principal investigator on numerous research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Guangdong Province, Shenzhen Municipality, and other agencies. Dr. Cui has published more than 90 SCI-indexed papers, with representative work appearing in high impact journals such as Nature Synthesis, ACS Nano, Advanced Functional Materials, etc. He was named among the World’s Top 2% Scientists in both 2024 and 2025. During his time in New Zealand, he received the National Heart Foundation of New Zealand Research Fellowship, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) Science Whitinga Fellowship, and the University of Otago Health Sciences Postdoctoral Fellowship. He was also honored with the WFIRM Young Investigator Award by the International Society for Biofabrication (ISBF).

Professor Shirley Jansen

Professor Shirley Jansen is The Lawrence-Brown Chair of Vascular Surgery, School of Population Health, Curtin University, and Head of the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, a busy quaternary unit overseeing 1000 in-patients per year. She was awarded PhD in 1999 and The Sustained Overall Clinical Excellence Award from Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in 2016. She has run over 40 government and industry sponsored clinical trials, the majority international as site PI, and many have led to global changes in the management of cardiovascular disease. She has supervised 10 PhDs and 3 Masters to completion and currently supervises five PhDs and three Masters. Shirley is the Director of the Heart and Vascular Research Institute, Harry Perkins Medical Research Institute and has led her unit to great success in first in man, pharmacological and device related trials in vascular disease. Her main research interests since PhD are in the interface between vascular physics and engineering, using biomimicry to innovate new 3D printed devices, and development of a novel therapeutic to cure atherosclerosis. Shirley co-leads the Cardiovascualr Science & Diabetes Programme at Harry Perkins. Shirley has wide experience in all aspects of vascular, endovascular surgery, perioperative care and prevention, and health outcomes. She has published over 160 research papers and chapters, has raised over $14million for research including MRFF and NHMRC. She has received 8 travelling fellowships in her career. She is also an inventor, and convenor of 2 national/international vascular surgical training workshops. Professor Jansen is actively engaged in cross-disciplinary collaborations locally and internationally in the areas of imaging, treatment modalities and outcomes for vascular diseases. Professor Jansen has been awarded the status of CTEC Diamond Convenor in recognition of her long term outstanding contributions to CTEC’s (UWA) training programs in Vascular Surgery. Dr Jacqui McGovern

Dr Jacqui McGovern is an interdisciplinary researcher who utilizes biomaterials and tissue engineering techniques to generate in vitro and in vivo models of bone metastatic cancers (e.g. breast and prostate cancer), as well as bone-resident tumours (osteosarcoma and multiple myeloma). She has expertise in 3D tissue models of complex organs, such as skin and bone. Her research aims to use these advanced models to study fundamental interactions between cancer cells and the human bone microenvironment, with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of life for patients affected by metastatic cancer. Dr McGovern has received support from the International Myeloma Foundation, Cancer Australia and Advance Queensland.

Professor Christophe Moser

EPFL, Switzerland

Christophe Moser graduated in physics from EPFL in 1993 and began his career as an engineer at Hexagon Metrology in Switzerland. He earned his PhD in 2000 in optical information processing from the California Institute of Technology. He co-founded and served as CEO of Ondax, Inc. in Monrovia, California, a company later acquired by Coherent. In 2010, he returned to EPFL, where he is now Full Professor. His research interests include volumetric 3D printing, ultra-compact endoscopy using multimode fibers and optical computing.Beyond his academic role, he has been instrumental in launching several ventures: Composyt Light Lab (2014, acquired by Intel in 2015) in head-worn displays, EarlySight SA (2019), Readily3D SA (2020), and Modendo (2021). He is a fellow of the Optical Society of Europe and has published over 120 peer-reviewed articles while accumulating more than 80 patents.

Professor Yin Xiao

Griffith University, Australia

Prof. Yin Xiao is a distinguished professor of dentistry, oral health, and medicine at Griffith University, an adjunct professor of medical engineering at the Queensland University of Technology, and an honorary professor at the University of Queensland. He was a dental specialist (BDSc 1986 and MDSc 1991 from Wuhan University) and started his academic career in 2000 (PhD from the University of Queensland). He is the Founder and Director of the Australia-China Centre for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (ACCTERM), established in 2013, and the Joint Research Centre of Functional Biomaterials for Tissue and Organ Replacement. His work predominantly focuses on bone, biomaterials, stem cells, dentistry, and tissue engineering. He has authored over 400 journal papers, three books, and 23 book chapters. His H-index is 98 (GS), and his work has been cited over 31,000 times. Australian Research Magazine named him one of Australia's top 250 researchers and the field leader in Biomedical Technology. He has been awarded the 2022 Outstanding Scientist award from the TERMIS-AP Society and the World’s Top 2% Scientists award in the AD Scientific Index.

Professor Yi-Chin Toh

Yi-Chin Toh is a Professor at Queensland University of Technology and is currently the Director of the ARC Training Centre for Microphysiological System Technology (MiPSET). She obtained her B.Eng in Chemical Engineering and Ph.D in Bioengineering from the National University of Singapore in 2001 and 2008, respectively. She did her post-doctoral training at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and A*STAR Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology. Before joining QUT in 2019, she was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, National University of Singapore. Yi-Chin leads the Micro Tissue Engineering Lab (https://microtelab.com/). Her research focuses on engineering microphysiological systems that mimic human biological complexity while being scalable and compatible with industry standards for routine drug testing. Her work in animal-alternative testing technologies has earned awards such as the Global 3R Award (2019) and the Lab on a Chip & Dolomite Pioneers in Miniaturisation Lectureship (2022). Prof Toh is an institutional leader who actively contributes to the scientific community and research training. She serves on the Australian Research Council College of Experts, is an Associate Editor of Microsystems & Nanoengineering, and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committees for Lab on a Chip and AIP Biomicrofluidics. She is currently acting Deputy Dean of QUT Faculty of Engineering and previously served as the faculty's Director of Research Training. She has held several leadership roles within the MicroTAS conference series since 2018.
